11th International Conference on Software Reuse September 27 – 30, 2009 Falls Church, VA, USASymposium Overview
ICSR 2009 will host a doctoral symposium. The goal is to bring together doctoral students working in the area of software engineering and to provide feedback on their current and proposed research. An emphasis on software reuse topics is encouraged, but not strictly required. Participants will be asked to prepare two presentations: The first should provide a brief summary of the student's research plan. It must be limited to two minutes and be given without the use of slides. The second should provide a more detailed plan, including a discussion of the main research challenges, work completed, and evaluation plan. It must be limited to twenty minutes; slides are strongly encouraged. An expert panel composed of software engineering researchers and practitioners will provide feedback to help students shape their work. While accepted papers will not appear in the ICSR Proceedings, all symposium papers and presentations will be made available through the ICSR website at http://icsr11.isase.org. Paper Submissions
All current doctoral students are invited to submit symposium papers for consideration. The event serves as an opportunity to receive early feedback on a new idea or later feedback to help tune a paper or dissertation. All submissions are limited to three pages in length and must conform to Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science format. Submissions are due June 28, 2009, and should be submitted to Jason O. Hallstrom (

). Please include “ICSR DS Submission” in the subject line. Travel AwardsWe are expecting to have available a limited amount of money for student travel awards to support participation in the doctoral symposium. The proposal for these awards is currently under review by the National Science Foundation. It has been recommended for acceptance by the Program Director but we are still waiting for official confirmation. The application process for travel funding is separate from the paper submission process. To apply, applicants must provide a complete CV, an application letter, and a letter of support from their advisor. Both letters are limited to two pages. The application letter must describe the applicant’s area of study, any milestones reached in the associated degree program, and the perceived relevance of the doctoral symposium to the applicant’s short- and long-term professional goals. Applicants are encouraged to include other relevant information that applies to them, such as a statement of economic need, citizenship status, and/or membership in an underrepresented group. The advisor’s letter must confirm the student’s enrollment status and address the expected benefits of the doctoral symposium to the applicant. The advisor may optionally discuss the applicant’s academic record and any other information relevant to the funding decision. Applications are due June 28, 2009, and should be submitted as a single PDF document to Jason O. Hallstrom (
